No Cure for Poor Constipated Baby

I'm down to my wits end. It has been more than a month since we started her on porridge and she has been constipated since then. I have surfed on numerous articles and asked around for opinions but still no changes. Before anyone has any suggestion, please take a look at the list of things I have tried in the past one month.
  1. Prune juice - Valerie hates prune juice, nanny force-feed her using a spoon but she would cry everytime and tries to spit it out.
  2. More veges and fruits - Her porridge mainly consist of vege like spinach / brocolli / potato / pumpkin. After her porridge, we fed her fruits puree - banana, papaya, pear, apples.
  3. More water intake - Don't talk about this one. She clamped her mouth shut and arched her back after 5 forced-spoonfeed.
  4. Fruit juices - Nope, can't get a drop into her mouth either.
  5. Sippy cup - I tried introducing sippy cup to her instead since she doesn't suck any water from the bottle anymore. She enjoyed holding the cup and tilted it a little until the water came pouring out. She was very wet end of it, not sure how much water got in but I could hear some gulping sound.
  6. Straws - Before deciding to buy a straw cup, I tried to introduce straws hoping this would trick her to drink more water. So I had 2 straws, gave her one to play while I use the other to attract her. I pretended to enjoy drinking water from it (with water dropped when I released my thumb at the other end), and she would follow. This seemed to work best now.
  7. We brought her to pediatrician and she said we were not feeding her enough cause she only had 2 main meal - lunch and inner. We needeed to add breakfast cereal into her diet to increase the amount of fibre. She also said water and juice were definitely not the cause - Woke up early to try to give her breakfast. She ate 5 spoonsful for the first day and totally rejected cereal for the rest of the days. She opted for milk instead. What a waste of time and energy.
  8. We gave her medication from the pedia every night as a means to soften her stool until constipation improves - Her poo remained hard every 3rd day so I stopped feeding her this medicine. (Really useless medication I would say)
  9. One mommy I met at the clinic suggested I try millet instead since white rice is constipating. Plus millet is high in fibre and has more protein and vitamins. I boiled millet porridge last Saturday, Valerie hated the coarse texture and only had a few spoonfuls. So I mixed rice and millet instead, she seemed to accept this well.
  10. 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil (extra virgin) into her porridge - Tried this as well last weekend

We tried option 9 and 10 last weekend, and I felt it sort of helped because Valerie seemed to want to go on Sunday but we didn't manage to get anything out. She just didn't stay long enough on the potty. (Nanny told us to remove all toys and no tv so that she could concentrate). But she just arched her back and tried to stand up. When I hit her legs slightly to get her to remain seated, she then cried pitifully. Daddy would then whisk her away. Grrhhhh...

So on Monday, we got the expected news again that it's hard poop and she bled at the end. It seems to be a vicious cycle every 3 days. No amount of high fibre food or water seems to do the trick. What seems to go wrong? I wish someone could just tell me. I have a colleague where her baby is exclusively breastfed. The baby was constipated one whole month since she started solid but after one month, her digestive system seems to be back on track. Oh well, mine is just over a month already. Just have to wait it out I guess... Meanwhile I would keep trying all those in the list. >:

Poor Constipated Baby

Okie.. we really have to take this constipation problem more seriously. Since her last episode of hard poo poo on Monday, her next poo was 3 days later on Thurs, still a bit hard but not as bad as needing the enema. But as I counted, she should be poo-ing on Sunday following her 3 days routine and mommy was super stressed out.

Between trying to feed her porridge, fruits and milk, I had to put her in the potty every now and then. That sunday morning, Ivan swore he saw her trying to push while on the potty but nothing happened. By afternoon, when I tried again, she gave a little cry and only wee wee in the potty. Throughout the afternoon, she did let out a weird short cry every now and then when she sat down to play. By evening around 5pm, we decided to give it a last shot.

This time she cried again and I just have to see it. I lifted her up and took a peek between her butt cheeks. Clearly there was something there. I showed to Ivan, yup, something hard is stuck down there. By this time Valerie continued to cry. We, helpless parents, simply didn't know what to do. We panicked, between seeing her cry, not able to help her to get anything out and knowing we gave all our enemas to the nanny (stupid us).

So, having no choice, I dialled nanny's number. I usually try not to disturb her on weekends but this was clearly an emergency. Fortunately she was around and asked us to come over. Quickly we drove over and in about 10 mins time we reached her home. Nanny took Valerie in and put her on the potty. Within seconds, she started crying again, trying to push. Seeing the hard poo still stuck, nanny used the enema on her.

Then the initial hard poo came out, followed by the softer stool. As she was pushing, Valerie's face turned all red. Crying and red and pushing real hard. Ivan and myself just stared speechless. By the end of the episode, there was also a little blood, probably from the tear on her anus. Poor little baby.

Nanny then wrapped her up and fed her lots of water. For the first time I didn't see Valerie resisting water, I bet she was just too tired to even fight back. Haha... After that we took her home, she fell asleep on the way. When we reached, Valerie continued sleeping, clearly exhausted. We took a nap as well.

We woke up 2 hours later, still traumatised by the experience. Sometimes I wonder if the baby was more traumatised or the parents. That night, you could see mommy desperately feeding her lots and lots of water and making sure she had some banana puree!
